Trees are a vital part of nature we can’t call them part since they entirely make up the whole environment around us. With the rise in technology and huge constructions going on, human beings have been neglecting the importance of trees entirely before studies told about the great threat it has in the books for us.
Nowadays, planting a tree or taking care of the existing mature one has been more than a trend. People are doing their best to promote greenery in their surroundings whether by tree planting event hosting at a huge level, a challenge, or simply choosing to go out and plant-specific numbers of trees on their birthday.
You can take the right steps as well with the change in the weather. Don’t know how? When you see that the temperature is getting warm in late winter and early spring, then it is the best time to take full benefit of such favorable conditions such as planning a prune session for the tree. Although some plants you see around might be dead and need the services of tree removal Sydney.
However, some of them are still in the stage of development and you can go ahead to provide a whole lot of measurable steps to them. This includes maintaining the size of the tree, healthy light penetration into their crowns, negates the chances of diseases, boosts the blooming, make it safer around your house by removing dead and broken branches and enhance the looks for a better appeal.
Let’s see how you can prune as a beginner:
1.Find the branches to be pruned on young trees
Various kinds of growths on trees should be pruned, that includes crossing branches, water sprouts (shoots have grown from the trunk), root suckers (shoots have growth from roots), and double leaders (two main stems with the same length). If you need to raise the crown of a tree, getting rid of lower branches would be appropriate.
When you are pruning a limb, a clean, sharp cut is the need that should be made just outside the branch without the leftover stub. A branch collar is a tissue in the trunk that surrounds the base of the branch at the joint area. Scaffold branches – these are the large limbs that make up the main structure of the tree’s crown – needed to be pruned if comes in almost direct contact with the trunk.
These branches need regular pruning to maintain the spacing of 12 to 18 inches and even distribution around the trunk. Another thing to keep in mind here is that there should be wide crotch angles and if a branch goes on to be more parallel to the trunk then it should be in the next line for pruning.
2.Pruning with the bleeding trees?
It is fine to prune the deciduous trees as well such as yellowwood, maples, willow, birches, hornbeam, black walnut, and beech when the temperatures go beyond the freezing produces excess sap flow from the newly cut ends. Although you will see the bleeding from cut ends and might not look good it has no harm whatsoever to the health of the tree.
3.Pruning the newly planted trees
A newly planted tree needs no pruning until you see a part that is diseased or damaged or broken branches. The reason why pruning is avoided with them is that they reduce their foliage that produces the nutrients necessary for new root growth and sustainability. The first pruning of the tree needs to be started once it has crossed two to five years.
4.How to prune large limbs?
A lot of care is needed while pruning the larger limbs. We need to avoid any tear in the bark to ensure a better wound closure and safety of the nearby environment or property. Here you need to implement three-point cut methods that are best for larger limbs.
The first cut is to be made 12-18 inches from the attachment point of the branch where you need to prefer an undercut to reach halfway through the branch. The second cut has to be made just a few inches outside the first cut, away from the trunk that has to go completely into the major portion of the branch. The third cut is placed right above the branch collar to get rid of the remaining stub.
5.Does any coating or wound dressing required for the cut ends?
The answer is no since putting the same will delay the complete process of tree wound closure and lead to tissue decay. Such methods need to be taken only once the pruning is done with the oak trees during the growing season to prevent issues such as storm damage. For the oak trees, prefer the dormant season for the pruning to prevent oak wilt.
